Mary Ann Pilskalnietis

DSA Award Winner (2007)

During a span of nearly 30 years, Mary Ann Pilskalnietis turned a set of tennis courts at Scarborough College Tennis Club into a haven for tennis enthusiasts. It became a welcoming environment for families and a link between the College and the surrounding community. She gathered expertise, promoted leadership and found resources to create a one-of-a-kind experience for tennis players.

Mary Ann devoted herself to excelling at the game and, eventually, she became a certified instructor. Her strong sense of family participation was the bedrock of all her programing at the club. Among her significant contributions to the club were creating programs to introduce tennis to adults, introducing mixed instrcutional and social programs to improve level of play and running club tournametns.

For university students, she developed leaders through mentoring programs, provided recreational and competitive play opportunities and encouraged professional development. For members of the community, she created junior-only time on the courts, developed junior memberships that included instruction, and developed various summer camps.

Her desire to create leadership and development opportunities for club members and for university students is unparalleled. She is a unique educator whose desire to promote tennis as a lifetime sport left no stone unturned.
