Marinus has been a steadfast figure in the tennis community, both as a player and an administrator. Moving to Canada at age 9, he continued his tennis journey at the Rideau Tennis Club.

During his university years, Marinus played for Carleton University, where he remained undefeated in singles and doubles for four out of five years, earning the Ontario-Quebec Athletic Association singles and doubles champion titles. His achievements are commemorated on Carleton University's Athletics Department Wall of Fame. Post-graduation, he won several prestigious trophies, including the Sir Percy Lake Trophy (Ottawa City Championships Men’s Singles) in 1970 and 1971.

Off the court, Marinus has significantly contributed to various tennis clubs in Ottawa, serving on the boards of the St. James Tennis Club, Rideau Tennis Club, and Rockcliffe Tennis Club, often as Treasurer. A strong advocate for junior tennis, he ensured programs and court time were available for young players.

He returned for a second stint as Treasurer in 2004 – 2011 then, after a year away, came back for a third stint from 2013 – 2022. A total of 19 years in the seat supporting five different Presidents of the NCTA, Marinus was well respected for his calming voice and level-headed thinking, he was often the diplomat at the table helping to maintain reason and fairness. He was also part of the NCTA’s Junior Development Fund Committee, identifying and funding high-performance local juniors.

Marinus frequently volunteered at key events, assisting the Tournament Director at the NCTA City Championship, supporting the Roman Cup, and contributing to the local organizing committee for the Davis Cup in Ottawa.
