Bill Knowles

DSA Award Winner (2007)

Bill Knowles taught hundreds of people for the love of the game of tennis. He ran beginner programs in Scarborough, mostly at Heron Park Tennis Club, for more than 50 years. Many that he taught as juniors have maintained their love of the game in their senior years. Bill instilled in them the appreciation for discipline and for respect when playing the game. Many of "his juniors" went on to receive tennis scholarships and to teach the game of tennis. He believed in their ability to improve their level of play and did everything to foster those gifts.

Bill organized many groups at the local level. He even set up indoor tennis in the West Hill Collegiate gymnasium with a net on volleyball posts and white adhesive tape for lines. He ran the Scarborough Tennis Federation's championships, which was a major event in the 1970s. Even at the age of 85 Bill was still organizing tennis for the "venerables" even though he could not play himself.

For Bill, tennis was his life. He was a true champion of grassroots tennis.
