New Canadians Holiday Camp!
Tennis Canada & Philpott Children's Tennis Host Camp for New Canadians
Over the holiday break (December 27-30), Sobeys Stadium hosted a tennis camp for new Canadian kids, defined as children between the ages of 8-13 whose families had immigrated to Canada within the past 10 years. The camp was organized by Tennis Canada and made possible thanks to a generous donation from an anonymous donor. The camp provided the opportunity for 50 local kids, whose families came from over 20 different countries, to learn tennis, make new friends, and have a fun camp experience.
For many of the campers, it was the first time they picked up a racquet and at camp were able to learn, play, and compete on-court in tennis sessions led by a team of certified coaches from Philpott Children’s Tennis. The campers also had the opportunity to participate in off-court games and activities, arts and crafts, and even ice skating – which was another first-time experience for many of these kids! Along with the new tennis skills they learned during the week, each camper received a racquet to take home with them and hopefully, also the inspiration to keep playing!
“Tennis Canada has done a great job putting this together and we were very excited to take part in the camp. Our Philpott coaches are always looking to connect with the community, and we can hopefully get these young tennis players back out on the court this summer.” – Richard Crowell, Executive Director, Philpott Children’s Tennis.
