Double Gold for Western University at the OUA Championships

Western University brought home gold in both the men’s and women’s 2018 OUA Tennis Championships this past weekend held at Mayfair Toronto East in Markham, ON. The teams posted identical 5-2 wins in the Championship round with both teams facing tough University of Toronto squads in the finals.

Western men post come from behind victory

The Western men’s team had their sights set on reclaiming the OUA title which they previously held in 2016.  After a 3rd place finish last year, they were determined to improve on that result. With gritty performances all the way down the line-up, they delivered a come from behind 5-2 victory after relinquishing the doubles point to Toronto.

University of Toronto came out strong in the doubles and posted wins at the #2 and #3 positions.  Christian Krusten and Victor Miglo (Toronto) secured the point at #3 doubles with their 8-7 win over Matt Erdman and Jonathan Soriano (Western).

With Toronto leading 1-0 heading into the singles, Western re-grouped and won 5 out of 6 singles matches to close out the 5-2 team victory and re-claim the OUA Championship title. The win that clinched the match for Western came at #6 singles where Ron Singer defeated Toronto’s Alex Bose 7-5, 6-0.

With the fixture decided, Western’s Matthew Oliver and Toronto’s Nathan Wong continued to battle in the closest match of the day. Oliver came from a set down to beat Wong 2-6, 7-5, 6-2. The win earned Oliver the OUA Rookie of the Year award as he went 4-0 over the weekend.

Western women “Three-peat”

Western University women’s’ team successfully defended their title to give them their 3rdconsecutive OUA Championship.  While the win gave the Mustangs their 12th OUA title in program history, it is their first time ever to win 3 consecutive Championships.

Western secured the doubles point with straightforward wins on all three courts.  The singles would get interesting though as University of Toronto brought their best tennis and forced a tight match.  Western posted straight set wins at #3 and 4 singles by Angela Chen and Sophie Biu to take a 3-0 lead in the team fixture.

There wasstill lots of tennis to be played though as courts #5 and #6 headed into third sets. Western’s Helen He finally defeated Toronto’s Mara Stroe 6-2, 6-3 at #1 singles to clinch the win for the Mustangs. The win also gave Helen He her third consecutive undefeated season in the OUA. She was rightfully named an OUA All-Star and Player of the Year for the 3rd consecutive year.

York also doubles in the medal count

The York University men’s team earned the Bronze Medal by beating McMaster 7-0.

Despite the score line, the individual matches were extremely close with many of the matches going the distance.  York won the doubles point by securing wins at the #1 and #2 positions. McMaster pulled out the #3 doubles with an 8-7 win by Viktor Kapetanovic and Martin Zelikovsky.

As singles got underway, the close score lines continued.  Courts 3, 5 and 6 were all three-set affairs with York coming out on top in each match. Tegbir Hara, Pierre Spencer and Sahil Sareen all won straight set matches at #1, #3 and #4 singles respectively to close out the victory for York.

The York women’s team followed the example of the men’s team and secured a bronze place finish. They defeated McMaster by a score of 6-1 in yet another match that was closer than the final scoreline.

The doubles point came down to a single tie-breaker at #2 doubles where Heather Hills and Randa Hassan pulled out the 8-7 win against McMaster’s Adele Lee and Maya Emerson.

York went on to win at #2, 3, 5 and 6 singles to secure the victory. Adele Lee (McMaster) posted the sole point for McMaster with a 6-2, 6-3 win over Randa Hassan at #4 singles.  At #1 singles, there was some spectacular tennis as Sara Krupica (York) held on to defeat Maya Emerson (McMaster) in two close tie-break sets, 7-6, 7-6. McMaster posted their best finish in over a decade and looks to be an up and coming team to keep an eye on.
