Meet the OTA Board – Sonja Zibin
Sonja was born and raised in Italy. As a child, she and her father shared a love for sports. She competed in soccer and skiing, but as a teenager she decided to stick with tennis and played on the European semi-professional circuit. After graduating from university, she moved to Canada but, due to family and work commitments, took a pause from tennis for many years. Thanks to her two tennis playing children, both involved in OTA tournaments since a young age, she started playing again at Parkway Valley TC in Toronto and rediscovered her love for a sport that has always brought much joy to her life. She joined the club’s competitive ladies and mixed teams and also began her volunteer journey there.
Sonja served on the Parkway Valley TC Board from 2006 to 2017 and on the North York Tennis Association Board from 2006 to 2018. In 2007, she was elected as the Liaison Officer for the InterCounty Tennis Association, the largest league in Canada with over 7,000 players. In 2017, she became the ICTA VP, and has been the President since 2018. Sonja started volunteering for Tennis Canada in the early days of their Jane and Finch kids’ program and, since 2006, she has been driving WTA and ATP players during the Rogers Cup – a “job” she absolutely loves!
Sonja joined the OTA Board in 2020 as Director at Large. Beside her volunteer activities, Sonja holds a day job, working as a Consular Officer at the Consulate General of Italy in Toronto.
