COVID-19 STATUS UPDATE - Indoor Tennis to Resume January 31, 2022, in Ontario
The Ontario Government has announced a 3-step plan to ease Covid-19 restrictions in numerous sectors across Ontario, including sports and recreational facilities. Step one, which begins January 31 states “non-spectator areas of sports and recreational fitness facilities, including gyms, can operate with 50 per cent capacity indoors.” Indoor tennis facilities will fall under this ruling and can commence activities at that time. Besides the 50% capacity restriction, other Covid-19 protocol such as masking and contact tracing will still be in place until further notice. Premier Doug Ford noted that The Province will continue to monitor critical Covid-19 benchmarks such as case counts, hospital admissions and ICU capacity and noted “We want to do everything humanly possible to avoid having to go backwards. If that means pausing between steps for a few extra days, we won't hesitate to do so.”
OTA President and CEO James Boyce stated, “obviously we are pleased that our indoor member clubs and academies will be able to re-open, albeit at 50% capacity, on January 31. The OTA, along with numerous other Ontario Sport Organizations and their members have been in contact with The Province over the past few weeks to make the case that it is important for their member clubs and facilities to safely re-open ASAP for the physical health and emotional well-being of members, staff and guests, as long as it is safe to do so. The OTA is also looking forward to resuming its tournament structure and instructor certification programs. We are confident that our OTA-member facilities will continue to adhere to the health and safety guidelines still in place and provide a safe and enjoyable environment for their players and staff.”
