Grimsby TC Hosts ITF Wheelchair Tennis Tournament June 14-17
The Grimsby Tennis Club will be hosting an international Wheelchair Tennis Tournament from June 14 to 17. The Janco Steel Wheelchair Tennis Classic is sanctioned by the International Tennis Federation and Tennis Canada. The tournament is part of the Uniqlo Wheelchair Tennis tour which also includes Canadian stops in Saint-Hyacinthe, Quebec, Vancouver, BC and Kamloops, BC.
The level of competition will be very high, attracting world ranked athletes from a number of countries. Past tournaments have included athletes from such countries as Brazil, Mexico, Spain, Austria, Portugal, USA and of course Canada. A non-profit event sponsored in part by Janco Steel, the tournament will be hosted by the Grimsby Tennis Club, with club member Ron Mauro acting as Tournament Director. It is the highest-level tournament ever hosted by the club.
Hosting such a high-level tournament requires significant organization and human and financial resources. Expenditures for this tournament include, Wheelchair Accessible vans, Wheelchair Accessible toilets, Athletic Therapists, tents, tennis balls, trophies, nutritional snacks, meals, water, sports drinks, wheelchair repair station, referee and umpires fees, etc. If you or your organization might be interested in assisting with this tournament in some way - a financial donation to help offset the overall cost of the tournament, or a draw prize, a gift certificate, or some other in-kind contribution feel free to contact Mr. Mauro at (905) 536-6500. With your help, the club and tournament organizers will provide these wheelchair athletes a first-class experience and in so doing, provide a memorable stay in the Niagara Region. Your contribution will be acknowledged in advertising and communication materials.
Come out to the event and support these world-class athletes and cheer for our Canadian competitors!
In advance of the tournament, the Grimsby Tennis Club will also be hosting an Ontario Para Network-organized “Have a Go” Wheelchair Tennis Event on June 5th. More details to follow in future editions of SPIN.
