Green Means Go: Activating Seniors Through Tennis!
The Ontario Tennis Association (OTA) was successful in obtaining a $23,000 grant from the Government of Ontario to run a Green Means Go program for seniors 50 + years of age in Northern Ontario. The program objective is to increase opportunities for 200 older adults (55-64) and seniors (65+) to stay active and connected to their communities (and decrease social isolation) through tennis, by delivering free low-impact tennis clinics at community tennis clubs and organizations for members, non-members, and newcomers to the sport.
The program’s outdoor summer session began last weekend at the Thunder Bay Community Tennis Centre and will run for six weeks. This will be followed by a fall/winter session at the Sudbury Indoor Tennis Centre. The clinics will be free, allowing seniors and older adults in communities, who may have never considered tennis as an activity option, to try it risk-free. On a bi-weekly basis, participants will learn the fundamentals and technical skills as well as enjoy matchplay.
Each session will be followed by a post-play social with light refreshments and snacks available for participants to enjoy which further encourages relationship-building and creates a consistent social routine for participants, helping seniors feel connected and supported within their community.
