Rules of the Court 2024

The Tennis Canada Rulebook: Rules of the Court 2024 is intended as a resource for officials, tournament administrators, coaches and players at all levels.

In addition to the International Tennis Federation’s Rules of Tennis, this book presents the rules, regulations and procedures that should be followed at all events sanctioned by Tennis Canada and the Ontario Tennis Association.  It is also a great resource for any tennis player who wants to compete at any level!

Rules of the Court 2024 also includes a comprehensive section on cases and decisions in order to assist all interested persons in understanding the finer points of the interpretation of the Rules of Tennis, as well as a section on “The Code: Guidelines for Unofficiated Matches.” The Code is an important source of information for all players and would be great to have on hand for league play, club tournaments, and ladders.

You may download the latest edition of Rules of the Court 2024. This edition replaces the previous version of the Rulebook, Rules of the Court 2022.

Printed copies of the Rules of the Court 2024 will be available shortly and can be purchased at the Tennis Canada Store.

Kerry Radigan Honored with

Bruce Childs Award 

Kerry Radigan Honored with Bruce Childs Award for Outstanding Contributions to Ancaster Tennis Club

The Ontario Tennis Association (OTA) is delighted to announce that Kerry Radigan of the Ancaster Tennis Club has been awarded the prestigious Bruce Childs Award. This accolade recognizes Kerry's exceptional dedication and invaluable contributions to the club over nearly five decades.

Kerry's journey with the Ancaster Tennis Club began almost 50 years ago. She has been a steadfast member and an influential figure on the board since 2011. Her leadership as President from October 2020 to June 2024 and her previous role as Marketing and Publicity Director have been pivotal in shaping the club's direction and success.

Kerry Radigan's Key Contributions:

• Board Service: 13 years (2011 - Present)
• Presidency: 4 years (Oct 2020 - June 2024)
• Marketing and Publicity Director: Prior to presidency

Significant Milestones Achieved Under Kerry's Leadership:

• Oversaw the expansion from 3 to 5 courts in 2012
• Supervised the construction of a new clubhouse in 2014
• Transitioned the club from a summer facility to an annual facility

The Bruce Childs Award was established to honor the memory of Bruce Childs, a dedicated volunteer at a Toronto community tennis club. The award recognizes executive members or dedicated club volunteers who have made outstanding contributions to their community tennis clubs over an extended period.

Kerry's unwavering commitment and tireless efforts have significantly benefitted the Ancaster Tennis Club and its members. Her achievements serve as an inspiration to all in the tennis community.

National Bank Roadshow visited

Bowmanville

The National Bank Tour Clinic at Bowmanville was a resounding success, delighting tennis enthusiasts with a day full of exciting activities. Participants enjoyed a dynamic doubles clinic, got to test the latest Yonex demo racquets, and competed for fantastic target prizes.

A special thanks go to June S. for her hard work in organizing this memorable event. Her dedication ensured everything ran smoothly, creating a fun and engaging experience for all involved.

The clinic brought together the community, celebrating tennis and fostering a love for the sport. Thanks to everyone who participated and made the day so special!

Girls. Set. Match. Program

We have an opportunity for our partner clubs/academies to host a Girls Set Match event at your club/camp! 

• Girls ONLY – recreational stream
• Event/Tournament MUST be delivered by an ALL-female staff/team
• Ages 10-14
• The tournament is free of charge to all competitors
• Includes a free pizza lunch for players
• 32 girls per event
• Players also receive a shirt with the GSM logo
• All players would need to be registered on the OTA’s Tournament Planner system (free rec license)
• The target should be the recreational stream

NIKE Transition Tour Updates

It has been a couple of weeks since the start of our 2024 Nike Transition Tour. The tournaments have brought us incredible competition so far and we are excited to see what the remainder of the Tour will bring. The leaderboards have been updated up until June 2nd. Here are the top 3 from each division so far. In the BU12 category, Maksim Singh Dobric and Kaige Zhu are tied for 1st with 26 points with Lucas Mihai Baiccoianu close behind in 3rd with 20.8. In the GU12 category, Sophia Jiajia Deng is ahead in 1st with 52 points, Emma Allen is in 2nd with 43 points, and Phoebe Xu is right on Emma’s tail in 3rd with 41.6 points. In the BU14 category, Darren Youran Li and Daniel Marinov are tied for the lead with 78 points, while Bogdan Ninkovic is in 3rd with 62.4 points. Finally, in the GU14 category, Kayla Xu has had a great start so far racking up a total of 134 points putting her in 1st place; Eliza Victoria Tchasti is behind in 2nd with 91.12 points, and Yutong Li closes out the podium in 3rd place with 81.472 points. There is still plenty of time to move up the rankings so continue trying your best and don’t stop aiming for that top spot.

Tennis Month in Canada!

The OTA, in collaboration with Tennis Canada, gears up to celebrate the inaugural Tennis Month in Canada.

The month-long celebration of tennis aims to inspire people of all ages and abilities across the country to participate in fun tennis events in their community.

Additionally, Rogers First Set – a program dedicated to introducing tennis to youth and families across Canada – will be staging "Try Events" in select areas throughout the month.

The initiative seeks to make tennis more accessible to Canadians from all walks of life. By offering accessible and supervised public activities at various locations, Tennis Canada and the PTTAs aim to reduce any barriers that prevent people from trying tennis.

ITF Masters at TCWO and OTLBC

June 27 - July 4

The $5K 10XTO Open Indoor Doubles Championships presented by Sam McDadi Real Estate were held last week at 10XTO located at Hotel X in Toronto. 35 men’s doubles teams and 14 women’s doubles teams battled for $5000 in prize money. Some of the best players in Ontario showcased their doubles prowess! In the men’s final, top-seeded Filip Obucina and Marko Stakusic (above, second and third left) defeated the seventh seed, Ilya Tiraspolsky and Andrew Bourne Kaponeridis, (above second right and right), 6-4, 6-4.

Mono TC Opens Wheelchair

Accessible Courts!

The Mono Tennis Club recently held the grand opening of their 2 new wheelchair accessible tennis courts! Several dignitaries were on hand including for the ceremony, including the MP for Dufferin Caledon, Kyle Seeback, the MPP for Dufferin Caledon, Sylvia Jones, John Creelman the Mayor of the Town of Mono, Marie Davies, Manager of National Events for Tennis Canada and Richard Mainella, President and CEO of the Ontario Tennis Association.

A special shout out to the team at Mono Tennis Club, including Club President Patti Powell, who were instrumental in obtaining the funding and having the courts built. Ms. Powell had this to say about the project, " it's taken almost four years of hard work but now we have two new wheelchair accessible tennis courts and a new wheelchair accessible washroom! I want to thank Tennis Canada who helped us organize an exhibition match of wheelchair tennis and the OTA for supporting regional tennis in Ontario!!"  Can't wait to organize more wheelchair tennis tournaments!!”

The celebrations included speeches from several guests, a ribbon-cutting ceremony, food and hospitality and a wheelchair tennis exhibition match! Congratulations Mono Tennis Club!

OTA Partners with Tennis Canada to

Deliver Rogers First Set!

The OTA recently partnered with Tennis Canada to deliver Rogers First Set events as part of its National Bank Roadshow outreach program. Rogers First Set is a new national program designed to introduce Canadian youth to the sport of tennis. Rogers First Set is designed to inspire youth and families in communities across Canada to try tennis and learn fundamental tennis skills in a fun, welcoming, safe, and positive environment.

The OTA outreach team will be delivering the program across the province when visiting member-clubs and larger community events. First Set on-court events are already scheduled this week at Stratford TC, Central TC in Toronto and Kingston TC

Community Tennis Leagues (CTL) helps to connect players so they can organize friendly matches with similarly skilled players in their community

How does it work?

• Register online and pay the registration fee ($20+tax)
• Players are organized into a group based on their level
• Contact info is sent to your group – players are responsible to arrange their match when and where works best for them (at your club, hub, or public court)
• Enter your scores online and win prizes*!

*Complete 4 matches, receive a $5 Tim Hortons gift card!
**For every match you play, you’ll be entered into a draw for a chance to win 2 tickets to the NBO!

Who can play?

• Anyone aged 18 years or older can play.
• For beginners looking to play their first match, or advanced players looking for new competition!

We have three divisions:

• Beginner (2.5 and below)
• Intermediate (3.0 and 3.5)
• Advanced (4.0 and above)

When does it start?

• Registration is OPEN and closes on April 29
• When registration closes, you will be placed in a group of 4-6, playing 4 or 5 matches over a month
• 2024 Spring Session 1 runs from May 1 – June 5

Rejuvenated Facility at Cutten Fields

in Guelph!

Cutten Fields is very excited to announce an extensive rejuvenation to its tennis facility. Not only has the club installed a new bubble over its four Har-Tru clay courts, but they also have new lighting and rebuilt clay courts. Cutten Fields first opened its tennis courts in 1985. The rejuvenation of the tennis facility is part of extensive upgrades to other areas of the club as well. The Club is proud to enhance the member experience by continuing to improve the club. The festival has been meticulously planned to offer a unique tennis experience combined with a blend of social activities, ensuring an all-encompassing and enjoyable event for all participants.

The event will take place at our newly expanded tennis facility at the Sir Garfield Sobers Sports Complex.

Event Overview

• Team Event Dates: Monday, October 7th to Friday, October 11th, 2024
• Location: The stunning island of Barbados

• Senior and Open Senior - Ladies over 35 & Men over 45
• Open - Any age group

Match Format

• 3 matches per tie - ladies doubles, men’s doubles and mixed doubles.
• Open Team Event: Men’s Doubles, Ladies Double’s & Mixed Doubles
• Senior Team Event: Men’s Over 45 Doubles, Women’s Over 35 Doubles & Mixed Doubles

Format of Play

• Round Robin
• All teams will be placed in a group to play a round robin format.
• Matches will be first to 9, no ad scoring with a 7-point tiebreaker at 8 all.
• The team that wins 2 or more matches wins the tie.
• In the event that there is a group tie, the number of games won and lost will determine the group standings.
• Teams may be required to play 2 matches (ties) in a day.
• The top team from each group will enter the knock-out phase of the competition, while the other teams in the groups will play a consolation knock-out tournament.
• Each team will play a minimum of three ties against other teams.

• Sunday, October 6, 2024: Sign-in and welcome reception, 6:00pm @ the National Tennis Centre.
• Round Robin Phase: Monday, October 7, 2024, beginning at 9am
