Capital Kids Summer Season Wrap Event! |
$314,700 OTF Grant from the Ontario Government Expands Access to Tennis for Ottawa Youth Local MPP Tyler Watt (Nepean) met with the Ontario Tennis Association (OTA) at Tanglewood Park last Friday for their End of Summer Celebration to hear more about the $314,700 Grow Grant from the provincial government’s Ontario Trillium Foundation that was used to expand their Capital Kids tennis programming. The project will reduce participation barriers for 1,800 low-income and marginalized youth in Ottawa over the next 3 years. “As a registered nurse, I know how important physical activity is to the well-being of young people,” said Watt. “This $314,700 investment will help remove barriers to participation for families and give more youth here in Nepean and across Ottawa the opportunity to get active, build confidence, find a sense of community, and develop healthy habits through tennis.”
Pictured above from left to right: Ottawa Councillor for Ward 9, Ely Schwartz (OTA Senior Community Outreach Manager), Nepean MPP Tyler Watt, Gary Thomas (Ontario Trillium Foundation Grant Review Member) and Zhenya Kondratovski (OTA Community Outreach Coordinator). Capital Kids is a recreational program which empowers children and youth aged six to fifteen to adopt healthy, active lifestyles through tennis. The project aims to minimize barriers to participation by delivering low-cost programming with equipment provided in high-needs, low-income, and culturally diverse communities across Ottawa. A team of certified and experienced coaches are in place to provide high-quality lessons incorporating tennis activities that teach fundamental skills, physical literacy and emphasize the importance of regular exercise. The three-year project will ultimately target more than 1,500 new participants across six new program sites and one winter location, focusing on culturally diverse and low-income areas and year-round program participation. In total, an estimated 1,800 people, including both existing and new participants, will directly benefit from the initiative. "The impact of this Trillium grant is substantial,” said Richard Mainella, President & CEO of the Ontario Tennis Association. “This investment allows the OTA to continue the Capital Kids legacy, which began in 2014 thanks to an earlier Trillium grant, while expanding into underserved communities. By making tennis more accessible and removing barriers to participation, we can create more opportunities for Ottawa youth to be active, develop their skills and build a lifelong connection to sport.” |
