Kayla Cross Wins ITF W75 in Granby! |
Kayla Cross (London) captured the women’s singles title at the Granby National Bank Championships on Sunday, defeating Japan’s Sara Saito 7-5, 6-1 in the final. The No. 3 seed produced a dominant performance throughout the week to secure the WTT W75 title, the biggest singles trophy of her career. After a tightly contested opening set, Cross won five consecutive games to pull away from Saito and seal the victory in one hour and 32 minutes. Following today’s win, Cross will reach a career-high ranking when the WTA rankings are updated on Monday, with a position projected around world No. 169. The title caps off an impressive week for the Canadian, as it was announced that she clinched the Road to the NBO competition in her comeback semi-final win over No. 1 seed Elizabeth Mandlik of the United States. Cross is the first Canadian woman in 14 years to win the Granby singles title since Eugenie Bouchard did so in 2012. She joins elite company in Bouchard and Stéphanie Dubois (2011) as the only three Canadian women to capture the title. Congratulations Kayla! Story courtesy of Tennis Canada. |

Check Out the Latest ONTENNISPodcast featuring Gavin Ziv |
In this episode of the ONTENNIS Podcast presented by Merchant of Tennis we're joined by Tennis Canada’s CEO Gavin Ziv. Gavin has spent most of his life around tennis. He got the tennis bug playing with his family as a youngster in the Thornhill area, later joining a couple of local clubs, taking some lessons and playing a little junior tennis. His family took him to the Canadian Open (now the National Bank Open presented by Rogers) when he was young and he was hooked for life! Gavin answered an ad in the paper looking for ball kids for the tournament in 1986 but was too young. He tried out again in 1987, made the squad and that is where his journey with Tennis Canada in began. In 1995 he furthered his role as a Tennis Canada volunteer, part of the ball crew committee and later as co-committee head for the ball crew team. Gavin joined Tennis Canada as a Marketing Intern in 1998 and got his first full-time position as tournament operations manager in 2001. He rose through the ranks at Tennis Canada, taking on positions including Director, Professional and National Events Tournament Manager, VP of Professional Events & NBO Managing Director and Chief Tournaments Officer of the National Bank Open, before being named Chief Executive Officer of Tennis Canada September of 2023. Gavin has not missed being at the NBO for 40 years and has many great memories and stories to tell! Watch or listen as he talks about the tournament’s early days at the first York University site, his involvement with the ATP and the WTA, Davis Cup and Billie Jean Cup memories, behind-the-scenes stories from the NBO and his thoughts about some of Canada’s great Canadian players like Daniel Nestor, Milos Raonic, Gaby Dabrowski. Leylah Annie Fernandez, Denis Shapovalov, and of course Bianca Andreescu and Vicky Mboko! He also talks about the future of Canadian tennis and how important his role, and that of Tennis Canada’s, is in growing the sport at the grassroots level across the country. Listen to the episode on Soundcloud here or search ONTENNIS on Apple and Spotify podcasts. View it on the OTA’s Youtube channel, OTATV, here. |

Recycleballs Program Gets a Boost in Southwest Region! |
It’s time to activate our local tennis communities to do their part to ensure tennis is more sustainable in Ontario. Clubs across the province are busy getting ready to open for the outdoor season. Nets and windscreens are being put up, courts are being groomed and cleaned, picnic tables are being put outside, hoppers are being filled and clubhouses are being cleaned out. And… a group of enthusiastic volunteers in the OTA’s Southwest Region, led by Regional Chair Rosemary Goodwin, are making a difference in a new way! Clubs in the region have coordinated their efforts and pooled their resources to ensure that old tennis balls don’t end up in a landfill site. They are working with Recycleballs Canada to efficiently and effectively find new uses for their old yellow orbs. Volunteers across the region, like the ones pictured above at Welland Tennis Club, are rounding up last year’s old tennis balls and packing them into the new RecycleBalls bins, getting them ready for delivery back to the collection depot at Sobeys Stadium. Other clubs from the Southwest region (and other parts of Ontario) who have ordered the recycling boxes, include Fenelon Falls Tennis Club, Aldershot Tennis Club, Wallace Park Tennis Club, Youngs Sportsplex and Queen’s Club and Grimsby Tennis Club (with Tim Moleski, pictured below).
Recycleballs Canada, managed by Tendev, a non-profit organization operated by volunteers and tennis lovers, has been in operation and providing a recycling solution for tennis balls since 2022. So far, more than 500,000 balls have been recycled in Canada. The program is proud to count on the support of Tennis Canada, for whom RecycleBalls Canada recycles balls at their headquarters in Toronto (Sobeys Stadium) and Montreal (IGA Stadium), which house their Regional and National Training Centres respectively. Tennis Canada also participates by recycling balls from ATP and WTA professional tournaments held throughout the country. In addition, these facilities serve as hubs to store the empty and full bins and coordinate the shipping within each province. The RecycleBalls Canada program is based on a collection program at clubs and municipalities’ level. The bins used have been specifically designed to attract the attention of players, be easy to handle and send back once full.
The collected balls are recycled to be used in different ways. For example, balls can be recycled and used as part of tennis court resurfacing, as was the case when Sobeys Stadium in Toronto was resurfaced in 2023. The partnership with the OTA and Tennis Canada will enable the RecycleBalls Canada program to be introduced to club managers and tennis players throughout Ontario. Through this partnership, RecycleBalls Canada hopes to be able to reach its global goal to recycle 1,000 000 balls a year by 2030. We encourage all clubs and academies to join the program and all players to contribute, by making sure to drop all their used balls in the RecycleBalls Canada bins. Together, we can all make a difference! More information on the program and on how to join it can be found at the following websites. Recycleballs Canada https://recycleballs.ca/ Tendev https://www.tendev.ca/en Why not get your club and region involved in this program and become part of the solution?! |
