Philpott Children’s Tennis is proud of its long history of promoting health, physical and moral well-being among Toronto’s inner-city youth through its skill and leadership development programs. 

They are currently seeking a skilled and experienced Head Instructor for the summer program (July 2 - August 23, 2024), normal working time is from 8:45 am – 1:15 pm (rain or shine). As the Head Instructor, you will be responsible for developing and implementing high-quality instructional programs for students of all ages and skill levels. This position will report to Site Supervisor & Philpott Head Coach

Philpott Children’s Tennis operates out of 16 different sites across the city of Toronto. They will do their best to place instructors at their preferred site. However, this will not always be possible.

The Head Instructor’s primary responsibility is to design and administer a quality summer tennis program at their designated site in a professional, courteous and enthusiastic manner. 

All interviews will be conducted March 16th from 12pm-3pm and again in May. If done in-person, interviews will be conducted at L’Amoreaux Tennis Centre (located at 300 Silver Springs Blvd., Scarborough) OR at San Romanoway (15 San Romanoway Rd). If done virtually a Zoom link will be provided.

The application deadline is April 20th, 2024.

Responsibilities:

1) Administration

  • He/she is expected to organize and prepare lessons for each day of instruction.
  • Arrive at 8:45 am to set up and organize equipment, take attendance
  • Provide accurate attendance, incident and equipment inventory reports
  • Store equipment and first aid kits securely
  • Follow Philpott Policies such as Heat/Rain Policy, Safe Sport, Safe Pick-Up, Code of Conduct and Policy Acknowledgement.
  • Report concerns/problems immediately to the Site Supervisor (or Head Coach)

2) Public Relations

  • Liaise with the Parks & Recreation (or other) representative on site
  • Wear shirts provided by Philpott when instructing
  • When appropriate, speak with parents and prospective students
  • Encourage participants to bring friends and introduce them to tennis.
  • Behave in a manner appropriate to an ambassador for the Philpott Children’s Charity

3) Instruction and Coaching

  • Prepare daily/weekly lesson plans and explain them to the assistant instructor.
  • Plan and execute each day’s lessons with suitable progressions and drills to meet the needs of the participants individually and as a group.
  • Manage the assistant instructor(s) and ensure they are engaged and contribute to the program at all times.

 4) Operations

  • Ensure a safe environment is maintained at the court site (i.e. not playing on wet courts, check the courts for debris prior to play, etc.)
  • Report safety problems immediately to the local Parks, Forestry & Recreation representative and to the Site Supervisor (or Head Coach)
  • Be knowledgeable about the emergency procedures of the community centre (or site)
