Betty Webster

DSA Award Winner (2012)

Much of Betty's life has been associated with the growth of tennis in the Hamilton area. She was President of the Lady's section of the Thistle Club which at the time had just one indoor court. Betty and her committee devised a plan to host exhibition matches in the form of an invitational tournament. Many well-known American players were recruited along with Canadian Davis Cup greats like John Sharpe, Keith Carpenter and Pierre Lamarche to name a few. This event raised the profile of tennis in Hamilton.

Betty was also involved with the Hamilton and District Tennis Association and served as Chair of the OTA's Public Relations Committee. During that time, Betty organized a massive three-day tennis extravaganza at Sherway Gardens which included fashion shows, coaching demonstrations and lessons for beginners. She also initiated Family Tennis Week in which each OTA member club was encouraged to organize a family day open house.

Betty Webster was a great promoter of tennis and her contribution to our sport stands as an example to all of what can be done with hard work and determination.
