Dave Gervan

Dave’s tennis volunteerism started back in 1994 as a board member of the Markham Tennis Club (MTC). He has dedicated hundreds of hours across numerous MTC board positions, including Treasurer (1994-2004), Vice-President (2005) and President (2006-2008). From 2003 to 2013, Dave reached out further by volunteering to help run the annual Roger’s Cup tournament at York University, the first five years in security and pass control, and the last five years as a captain supervising a group of volunteers.

In 2013, the OTA approached Dave wanting to utilize his extensive tennis expertise for the betterment of tennis in the province. He held the position of Vice-Chair of Membership & Regional Development for six years (2014-2020), working with the OTA’s network of 10 Regional Chairs to identify ways to grow tennis across Ontario.

Then, in 2015, the City of Markham declared MTC’s existing clubhouse unsafe and closed it down, while many of the existing board stepped down with no succession plan in place. Dave not only agreed to participate on a liaison committee working with the City to negotiate building a new clubhouse, he also agreed to step in as Vice-President a second time (2017-2020), working with a revitalized board and new management team to keep the club going. During these four years, Dave saw his efforts come to fruition with a newly expanded clubhouse in 2017 along with a new management team in place to bring new programming and excitement to the tennis community. The club celebrated its 50th anniversary in 2018 and completed further infrastructure upgrades with new fencing, court resurfacing and a new stone patio. In 2020 during the COVID19 crisis Dave was there to lend a hand to ensure members were kept safe and followed all required protocols. The Markham tennis community has seen a lot of positive changes in the club over many years, in large part due to his ongoing commitment and energy.

In 2019, the City showed interest in building their first ever Winter Tennis Bubble with a private operator and chose the MTC site to be that location. Dave participated on a liaison committee with the City to help negotiate a shared use agreement between the summer club and the new winter operation. It is hoped the new winter bubble will be in place by 2021.

The OTA is proud to have you as part of their DSA Hall of Fame; a truly exceptional contribution to tennis in Ontario.
