Sharon Fichman Wins Another Grand Slam Title

Sharon Fichman (see photo right) of Toronto and her partner Anastasia Pavyluchenkova of Russia have every right to be smiling. They are seen here with their trophies for winning the French Open girls doubles title after their 6-7(4), 6-2, 6-1 victory over top seeds Caroline Wozniacki (Denmark) and Agnieszka Radwanska (Poland) at Roland Garros stadium in Paris.

Earlier this year Fichman and Pavyluchenkova won the Australian Open girls doubles in Melbourne with a 6-2, 6-2 win over Alize Cornet (France) and Corinna Dentoni (Italy).

Fifteen year old Sharon is the youngest member of the Canadian Federation Cup team and the first player from Canada to capture consecutive junior grand slam titles. For a complete record of her international playing career visit www.ITFjuniors.com.

Senior Mixed at Toronto Lawn

The Ontario Senior Mixed Doubles tournament was held a little earlier this year at the Toronto Lawn Tennis Club, and the competition was hot on the courts, as temperatures soared into the high nineties.

The Winners of Junior Masters (Over 30) event was the home club team of Garett Prins and Julie Staples, who beat Trevor Aristotle and Sandra Cimetta in the final. The team of Alan Butler and Patti Powell won the consolation event.

The Seniors (Over 40) event was won by Abbas Khiltash and Akemi Seiriki who didn`t have to work in the heat to take the final from Paul Kingston and Kelly Stobbe. Paul was overcome by the heat on Saturday and was hospitalised and advised not to take to the courts until he was fully recovered. This is a practical reminder of why we need to drink plenty of water before we play in the heat as well as during matches. Rosti and Martina Brankovsky won the consolation event in this division.

In the Masters (Over 50) division the team of Jim Boyce and Anke Magnus took the final over the team of Ivan Petrova and Marina Mihailovich, pictured here with Tournament Chair, Mike McLoughlin, centre. John Payne and Margaret Lansens won the consolation.

Both the Grand Masters (Over 60) and the Legends (Over 70) were played as round robins and the team of Frank Baldock and Valerie Krompholc took the Grand Masters title while Henry Prusinowski and partner Eva Barbiero took the Legends honours.

This event has a reputation of being one of the best social tennis events of the summer season and is one of the few events that provides mixed doubles for the over 30 and over 60 and over 70 groups. Next year it will be held on the weekend of July 1st. With a delicious dinner and the chance to hang out at the exclusive Toronto Lawn Tennis Club, this event should be a fixture in everyone`s calendar.

TennisAccess Teams at Rexall Centre

More than 120 players took part in the Rogers Cup TennisAccess.com Team Tennis event held on the very hot Sunday of June 18th. Everyone who participated got a chance to feel what it was like to play on Centre Court, but most of the matches were played on the practice courts where there there is some shade and seating for team supporters and players alike at courtside.

In the B division team Code Violation squeaked past the Oriental Noodles in a final match that was decided in a super tie-breaker.

In the A division , the Dentonia Park Tennis Club # 2 team proved to be # 1 by beating the Olive Pits team in the final. (see photo)

It was a long hot day and people were glad to be able to cool off and get refreshments and hang out in the Players Lounge.

Jane Finch Community Event

On Saturday June 3, Tennis Canada played host to more than 300 children and volunteers from local schools and community groups in the Jane and Finch neighbourhood for the second annual Kids Day. The day included fitness testing, a group tennis lesson, a tour of the Rexall Centre and lunch. All participants were given free tickets for the Rogers Cup. Saturday August 5th will be Jane and Finch Neighbourhood Day at the Rogers Cup.

This day is part of a larger initiative to create sustainable recreation programs for youth in the area. The OTA`s Floor Tennis program is already being implemented in 36 schools in the neighbourhood. The Philpott Fund has paved the way by providing camps in the neighbourhood working with the San Romanoway Revitalization Association and the local Boys and Girls Club.

It is hoped to add another level of tennis activity in partnership with the local schools and youth organizations, by offering facilities at the Rexall Centre for a minor tennis league to be played over the fall and winter months. It is further hoped that youth who graduate from these programs will be recruited and certified to play an active part in furthering the programming in the area.

International Club in Long Island

The annual International Lawn Tennis Club match between the U.S.A. and Canada was hosted by the American team on the grass courts at Piping Rock Country Club on Long Island, New York on the weekend of June 10 and 11.

The men`s Open team took a strong lead on the Saturday and despite their opponents attempts to have them feel under the weather on Sunday, which accounts for the broad smiles on the faces of this photo of, from left to right, Andrew Nisker, Coulter Wright, Chris Ritchie, Garett Prins and Rob Janacek, the team were able to defend their winning record and keep the Dick Sorlein Cup.

In the seniors ladies matches for the Jean Logan Gengler Cup, it was two of Jean Gengler`s daughters, Louise Gengler, who has just retired as coach of the Princeton women`s tennis team and Margie Smith, wife of Stan Smith. The sisters took the first of the Sunday afternoon doubles matches to break the tie in scoring. The Gengler Trophy returned to the U.S. team with a final score of 9 matches to 7.

In the senior men`s matches the U.S. team dominated despite some great play. This did not dampen the spirits of the Canadian team as they know the US men always field a strong team in this event.

Marsh Trophy in Rochester

The Marsh Trophy pits teams from Rochester, Syracuse, Buffalo and Toronto against each other in an annual event that moves from city to city. The event has a long tradition. It was first held in 1927 and is one of the longest running team tennis events in existence.

This year each tie consisted of 10 singles and 7 doubles in open and various age category play. On the hottest weekend of year, June 17 and 18, teams gathered in Rochester. Because of the heat it was decided that, instead of a third set, matches tied at one set each would be determined by a super tie-breaker. On Saturday, Toronto beat Syracuse by a score of 9-8 and Rochester beat Buffalo 9-8.

Whether it was because of the heat, the hockey game celebrations the night before or home court advantage or just skill, the Rochester team trounced the Toronto team on Sunday.

Some members of the Toronto team, captained by Jay Wedgbury of the Boulevard Club, are seen here trying to keep cool as they wait for the matches to finish.
