Head-To-Head Rankings FAQ |
Q: Where can I find the Head-to-Head rankings on the OTA website? |
A: From the OTA homepage (www.tennisontario.com) click the "Player Development" tab, followed by "Rogers Rankings" - then select your desired category.
Q: How does the Head-to-Head ranking system work? |
A: The rankings are based on quality of wins rather than the number of rounds reached. Therefore, the stronger player is expected to win while the weaker player is expected to lose.
Each sanctioned tournament or event will be assigned a specific weight ranging from one to five stars (see a Rogers Ranking Demo at the bottom of this page).
Q: How do I become ranked? |
A: In order for an unranked player to become ranked, a player must accumulate at least one win and two losses against other ranked players over the course of 12 months.
It is important to note that in the calculation of a player’s temporary ranking, defaults as well as wins/losses against players who have more than 300 points of the average of other wins/losses will not count.
Q: My opponent did not have ranking points when we played, will that result count towards my ranking? |
A: Matches against unranked players will not be counted towards the rankings unless the unranked player becomes ranked within a 12 month timeframe. Once the unranked player becomes ranked, the result will be counted retroactively for both players during the next ranking period.
Q:Will I lose ranking points if I withdraw from a match? |
A: Players that withdraw from an event after the draw has been made will automatically lose points while their opponent will automatically earn 20 points for a win by default. Three defaults within a 12 month window will result in a suspension from sanctioned tournaments for a period of three months.
If a player withdraws for medical reasons (i.e. illness or injury) official written medical documentation must be provided to the OTA within 3 days of the conclusion of the tournament in order for rank points to be reinstated.
Players that retire from a match while it is in progress will lose points as if they had lost a regular match.
Q: Why am I not listed on the rankings? |
A: If you have not signed up to become a member of the Ontario Tennis Association or your membership has expired, your name will not be included in the rankings.
To sign up or renew your membership, please go to our homepage (www.tennisontario.com) and click on the "Register Here" box.
Some players whose membership is current will not initially appear on the rankings. This is because a player is has not met the minimum requirements to become ranked (see above). The BASELINE ranking system has a built-in feature that automatically checks for this each time a ranking is run.
Q: My player profile says I am “Inactive” and I am no longer listed on the rankings, what does this mean? |
A: To maintain ranking privileges, players are required to compete regularly and play a minimum number of matches annually. A player will be considered inactive if they do not compete in at least one match during the time period outlined below:
-
Juniors: 9 months
-
Adults: 12 months
Once this occurs, the player’s level of play will have to be re-evaluated and they will have to be re-initialized onto the ranking system as if they were an unranked player.
Q: When are the rankings updated? |
A: Typically, the Head-to-Head rankings are updated weekly each Friday morning.
Q: Where can I go to find more detailed information about the Head-to-Head rankings? |
A: For more detailed and specific information about the rankings, please go to www.tenniscanada.com/rogersrankings. This page will provide more detailed information about how the head-to-head ranking system works (i.e. which tournaments will be counted, the ranking initialization formula, etc.).
Q: Who do I contact if I have any questions about the ranking system? |
A: Inquiries can be made to the OTA’s Ranking Coordinator Samantha Pagnotta (Primary contact via email: tournaments@tennisontario.com, Secondary contact via phone: 416-514-1105).
**All ranking inquiries such as changes in results or rank points must be made within 6 months of the tournament’s completion. Beyond this time period, the OTA will not alter a player’s record.

Rogers Ranking Demo: |
The example below demonstrates how the Rogers Rankings will fluctuate if a stronger player defeats a weaker player or vice versa.
Tournament Star Value = 3 stars
-
Player A has 3200 points and is playing against Player B, who has 3000 points. The point difference between the two players is 200.
-
The difference in points falls between 200 – 299 points under the three-star column on the head-to-head points chart.
-
If Player A wins, the chart indicates that as the higher ranked player, they earn 4 points while Player B loses 4 points
-
If Player B wins, the chart indicates that as the lower ranked player, they earn 44 points while Player A loses 44 points

Senior Rankings FAQs |
Q: Which events are eligible for senior rankings? |
A: All sanctioned OTA events. Any national events played in Ontario. |
Q: What happens if a player gets a bye in the first round? |
A: If a player gets a bye and then loses in their first round played, they get the same points as if they did not have a bye and lost in the first round. If a player gets a bye, wins their first match and then loses their second (third round) match they get the points for having won two rounds (i.e.: the points for reaching the round they lost in). |
Q: Are the points for the Ontario and National Senior Rankings the same? |
A: At present they are different. National Senior Rankings are manually calculated once a year for only those players who play in outdoor senior nationals using the best two results from eligible tournaments throughout the year. The points depend on the round reached and the "star" value of the event with outdoor nationals having the highest point values, followed by indoor nationals, regional championships (Ontario is considered a region) and provincial level championships. |
Q: I have played tournaments but do not seem to have a ranking? |
A: Rankings are published only for players with up to date player registration. If a player's registration has lapsed they will not appear to have a ranking, but the ranking information will reappear when they pay their registration fee. |
