Peter Dimmer 1915-2003
A major influence in Ontario tennis throughout his entire adult life from the 1950's onward in many capacities. Played a major role in the establishment of the venerable Queen's Club in Toronto, the city's first indoor club. Originated junior tennis development programs at several community clubs and toured the province for the OLTA, encouraging clubs to establish these programs. Co-founder of the OLTA Tennis Teaching Committee where he developed the original manuals and programs to teach and certify instructors and went on to chair this committee for 11 years until 1981. Was instrumental in the creation of the Ontario Umpires Association to improve the quality of officiating. In 1968 was the referee at the Canadian Open and Closed tennis championships and in 1969 was the Canadian Open tournament director.
In 1970 founded the Dimmer Tennis School which ran in several locations in Toronto for nearly 20 years providing instruction to 1,800 students at its peak. Inducted into the Canadian Tennis Hall of Fame as a builder in 1993 in recognition of his lifetime contribution as a pioneer of tennis development. |
